Prof. Hezy Shoshani was a close and dear friend. His death removes one of the most passionate protectors of elephants on the globe–a loss that touches all animal life and humankind.

Besides being a friend and neighbor in Eritrea, he was also a wonderful professional collaborator. His identification of fauna species from excavations of an ancient civilization in Eritrea dating to 800–350 BCE were a major contribution to the prehistory of the Horn.

He was a much loved mentor to many students in Eritrea, and he was a priceless friend who knew no limits to loyalty and companionship.

Wow!
What a great story this is and thank you so very much
for printing it. I was smiling while reading your words
about there not being much info on the search engines but you made my day with your story. I met and got Mr. Malamud’s autograph in Caesar’s Palace
where he was covering a fight i attended. Very nice guy and seemed a little surprised to be asked for his autograph. I never missed his Notes on a Scorecard and I really miss his writing. Again….thank you so

ive been riding with talia for a very long time and she was a great friend, not only to me, but to everyone… i know for a fact that everyone who has ever met her will miss her greatly. i only heard of this tragic event a little while ago and was devistated when i heard. she was an amazing girl and an amazing rider. she always had a smile on her face no matter what and i know she loved her family and horses.
we will miss you talia…

I finished watching this story just a few minutes ago on 20/20 and my eyes filled with tears. I send my condolences to her family, and I send my prayers. I’ve never met Talia or her family, but to see someone so close to my age, lose their life just breaks my heart. I hope that she is riding her horse up in Heaven, they are all in a better place.
